After losing a spouse, older adults — and men in particular — are more likely to pass away. We refer to this phenomena as the widowhood effect.

The widowhood effect is a phenomena whereby elderly persons who have lost a spouse have a higher risk of passing away themselves. This risk is greatest in the first three months after the spouse's passing. people whose spouses had recently passed away had a 66% greater likelihood of passing away within the first three months following their spouse's death. Closely related spouses were also more likely to experience depression after becoming widows. A surviving spouse may experience greater stress if the death was sudden and unexpected, though this also depends on the circumstances of the individual.
