Ecological succession is the process by which the mix of species and habitat in an area changes over time. Gradually, these communities replace one another until a “climax community” like a mature forest is reached, or until a disturbance, like a fire, occurs.
The process by which a community's species makeup evolves over time is known as ecological succession. The time frame can be anything from a few years to several decades (for instance, following a wildfire). Bacteria enable the cycling of nutrients like carbon, nitrogen, and sulphur. From a small group of pioneering plants and animals to a stable or self-sustaining climax community, the community develops through an increase in complexity. The "engine" of succession and the reason why ecosystems evolve are the effects of established organisms on their own environment. One's environment is impacted by living, sometimes implicitly and sometimes overtly.
