German composer and pianist Fanny Mendelssohn, also known as Fanny Mendelssohn Bartholdy and, after her marriage, Fanny Hensel, was a prominent figure in the early Romantic movement (as well as Fanny Mendelssohn Hensel). Her works include four cantatas, a piano trio, a piano quartet, an orchestral overture, more than 125 piano pieces, and more than 250 lieder, the majority of which were unpublished during her lifetime. Despite being recognised for her piano technique, she hardly ever performed in front of an audience outside of her immediate family.
Her mother, as well as the composers Ludwig Berger and Carl Friedrich Zelter, gave her a solid musical education while she was a child in Berlin. Her younger brother Felix Mendelssohn, who was also a composer and pianist, attended the same university as her, and the two grew particularly close. Six of her songs were included in her brother's Opus 8 and Opus 9 collections under his name due to her family's objections and the time's social norms regarding women's duties.
