Impala was the first SQL on Hadoop application. Running on Apache Hadoop is the query engine Apache Impala.
The project went into wide availability in May 2013 after being introduced in October 2012 with a public beta test distribution. Impala enables users to execute low-latency SQL queries against data stored in HDFS and Apache HBase without the need for data movement or transformation thanks to the introduction of scalable parallel database technology to Hadoop. Impala is connected with Hadoop to use the same metadata, resource management, and file and data formats as MapReduce, Apache Hive, and Apache Pig.
Impala is marketed for analysts and data scientists to use SQL or business intelligence tools to execute analytics on data stored in Hadoop. As a result, interactive searches and massive data processing (through MapReduce).
