When a call is placed on hold, the caller is effectively parked and unable to communicate with the person on the other end of the line. Wait-music or a pre-recorded message is usually played to the waiting caller. If you're on a call and need to make another, you can put one call on hold and make another (kind of like having a two-line phone).
People on hold (including you) will be unable to see or hear anyone else on the call. Screen sharing is also momentarily halted. When you continue your call, everything will be back to normal. When someone on a PSTN line is placed on hold, they will hear music.
