In 1948, Robert K. Merton coined the term self-fulfilling prophecy to describe "a misdefinition of a situation that evokes behavior that makes a false conception become a reality." There are two types of self-fulfilling prophecies: Self-imposed prophecies occur when expectations itself influences action. Another forced forecast occurs when other people's expectations influence behavior. All valued opinions can lead to this forecast. It can occur in a circular pattern and can be positive or negative.
When interpersonal self-fulfillment prophecies are enacted, we see a cycle:

-> Beliefs influence our actions toward others
-> Our actions toward others, shaped by our beliefs about them, influence their beliefs about us
-> Their beliefs cause them to act in ways that are consistent with their beliefs about us, which reinforce our initial beliefs about ourselves.
cycle is self-perpetuating and can lead to enactment of behavior driven by unconscious motivators, which inevitably leads to an unsatisfactory fractured relationship.
