Socioeconomic status (SES) is a combined economic and sociological measure of a person's work experience, economic access to resources, and social standing in relation to others. Unlike an individual's SES, which is only based on their own characteristics, a family's SES is determined by looking at the household income, the education and occupation of the earners, as well as their combined income.

Perceived financial stress, which is defined as the "balance between income and necessary expenses," has recently been found to be a less well-known characteristic of SES.
