An obsessive compulsive behavior is defined as a persistent, uncontrollable thought, picture, or impulse that invades consciousness and produces extreme suffering.

Recurrent, unwanted thoughts, ideas, or feelings are experienced by those with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) (obsessions). They feel forced to engage in an activity frequently to banish the thoughts (compulsions). Repetitive behaviors like hand washing, cleaning, checking on things, and mental acts like (counting) or other activities can substantially interfere with a person's daily activities and social interactions.

Even people without OCD frequently have disturbing thoughts or engage in repetitive behaviors. But these hardly ever get in the way of daily life. Patients with OCD exhibit rigid behavior and intrusive, repetitive thoughts. When the behaviors are not followed, there is typically great suffering and a particular fear of terrible consequences (to oneself or loved ones).
