A major risk to public safety is distracted driving. Particularly, the worrisome increase in fatal distracted driving accidents seemed to be a result of the enormous increase in texting after 2005.
Driver distraction-related fatal accidents have risen in recent years. The usage of cell phones and texting while driving have received a lot of attention from the media and legislators as severe public hazards. The movement for federal legislation appears to be gaining traction as some states have already passed laws prohibiting texting and cell phone use while driving. We examined trends in fatalities and traits of distracted drivers engaged in fatal crashes using data on all fatal automobile accidents occurring on public roads in the United States. Our findings indicated that recent and rapid increases in texting volumes had contributed to thousands more fatal car accidents each year in the US.
