When taking blood pressure you have to keep the cuff level with the heart in order to get an accurate reading of blood pressure. The systolic (top number) is the pressure in the artery leaving the heart which makes it all the more important that the cuff must be level with the heart in order to get the accurate reading of the pressure in the artery leaving the heart.
