The Virginia House of Burgesses was the first democratically-elected legislative body in British North America. This group of representatives met from 1619 until 1776.

The House of Burgesses was an assembly of elected representatives from Virginia that met from 1643 to 1776. It is notable for being the training ground of many of America's Founding Fathers, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Richard Henry Lee, and Patrick Henry.

This assembly was especially important prior to the revolutionary war, as the burguesses defended the rights of the colonists agaisnt a plan from the House of Representatives to impose a stamp tax with the objective of raising money to pay off the debt accumulated during the war with France.
