A composition that presents a musical idea in one voice then immediately presents it in a second voice is using a compositional technique called IMITATION.
Imitation in music is defined as the repetition of a melody in two or more simultaneous texture shortly after its first appearance in a different voice. The melody may vary but it will still retain its original character.
