From 21 November 1806 to 11 April 1814, during the Napoleonic Wars, Napoleon Bonaparte imposed a broad trade embargo on the British Empire known as the Continental Blockade or Continental System. The naval blockade of the French coasts established by the British government on May 16th, 1806 prompted Napoleon to issue the Berlin Decree on November 21st. After Napoleon's initial abdication, the embargo was imposed sporadically and ended on April 11, 1814. Although British exports to the continent as a percentage of the nation's total trade fell from 55% to 25% between 1802 and 1806, the blockade did not significantly hurt the British economy. Napoleon invaded Spain and Russia after learning that significant trade was passing through those nations.
His forces were constrained in Spain, where the Spanish War of Independence was concurrent, suffered greatly in Russia in 1812, and ultimately withdrew from it.
