The State Board of Pardons and Paroles will occasionally award reprieves to prisoners who still have at least 30 days to serve. These criminals are placed under DCS surveillance once they are released from jail. They receive the same amount of attention and dedication to monitoring as offenders who have been released under typical parole conditions.
Prior to their maximum release date, a criminal may be released from jail on conditional parole. Most prisoners reach their halfway point in their jail sentence, at which point they are eligible for parole consideration.
Inmates who have been deemed terminally ill by the Department of Corrections may be granted medical reprieves by the Parole Board. The following requirements must be met before an inmate's medical condition is taken into account:
- The prisoner must have a terminal illness
- The prisoner must be completely incapable and dependent on others for daily activities like eating, washing, dressing, breathing, and walking.
- The prisoner's life expectancy must be less than a year.
