Julie's close friends are closer than those who live a few houses away from her. This lends credence to the proximity effect theory.

Through electromagnetic induction, a shifting magnetic field can affect houses the distribution of an electric current flowing through an electrical proximity effect conductor. A conductor develops an associated alternating magnetic field (AMF) when an alternating current (AC) travels through it. The distribution of current flowing through nearby conductors is altered by eddy currents caused by the alternating magnetic field. As a result, the conductor's current is concentrated in its portions that are proximity effect furthest from other neighboring conductors that are moving current in the same direction.

When compared to a conductor's resistance to a DC current, the proximity effect can greatly increase a neighboring conductor's AC resistance. With more frequency, the effect grows. A conductor's AC houses resistance at higher frequencies can easily be ten times greater than its DC resistance.
