Pubic Symphysis can be used to estimate age at death in subadult remains.
A fibrocartilaginous disc is sandwiched between the articular surfaces of the pubic bones to form the distinctive joint known as the pubic symphysis. Under physiological settings, it is capable of a modest amount of movement and resists tensile, shearing, and compressive pressures in most people.
The surface will then stop being billowed and the pubic symphysis will have a complete and defined "rim" around its boundaries. The rim and surface will gradually begin to deteriorate, exhibiting evidence of pitting and growing irregularity in the borders.
