Vietnamese Nationalist Party in Vietnam had been seeking independence from France since the early 20th century. The party's origins were a group of intellectuals based in Hanoi who began publishing revolutionary articles in the mid-1920s. Colonial France to stem this revolutionary movement with censorship. The party gained popularity among northerners, teachers and intellectuals. This party modelling itself on the Chinese Nationalist Kuomintang party. In 1928 there was an assassination carried out on French officials and Vietnamese collaborators which made this party more and more attention. This event made the French colonial government arrest 300-400 party members and began to crack down.
