In 1943 psychologist Abraham Maslow presented his theory of the classification system of needs and motivations that universally move individuals in society.
Individuals are motivated to fulfill certain needs, and some of them are a priority and prevail over others, understanding that they cannot all be satisfied simultaneously, but that to achieve some, others must have been previously met.
As illustrated and explained in the Simply Psychology image (attached), there are 5 levels of needs and motivations:
1) Physiological (first needs to be met)
2) Safety
3) Love and belongingness
4) Esteem
5) Self-actualization
Maslow continued to update his theory over the years, and by 1987 he stated that this hierarchical order was not necessarily rigid, and argued that the order of needs could be flexible according to external circumstances or individual differences.
