In Common Sense, Thomas Paine made the following arguments: it is absurd for an island to rule a continent; America could avoid European conflicts by being free of Great Britain; London is too far away to rule America; and the King and Parliament will unavoidably rule for Britain's benefit, not America's.

A sizable portion of the unconvinced group was persuaded to favor American independence by Paine's persuasive arguments. This surge in popular support gave the Second Continental Congress delegates in Philadelphia the green light to proclaim independence on July 4, 1776. In other words, one little pamphlet changed the direction of American history in less than six months.
