Jamal’s behaviour of confirming to the expectations of his future bride’s family expectations while working on wedding preparations illustrate the importance of normative social influence.

What is normative social influence?

When a person adapts to fit in with the group out of fear of ridicule or exclusion, this is referred to as normative social influence. Compliance is frequently related to normative social influence, where a person modifies their behavior in public but keeps their private beliefs the same.

In the above situation, Jamal accepts all the demands of his bride’s family so he can get their approval while wedding preparations were going on. If he does not confirm to their expectations, the bride’s parents would not favour him and might ridicule him. However, this behavior of him is temporary and might change once he is married.

Another example of normative social influence is when a person attends a marriage function or a funeral, it is expected of them to confirm to standard dress code to avoid being ridiculed by others.
