Ketosis is a metabolic state. High concentration of ketones, called beta-Hydroxybutyra is there in the blood. It occurs when the body burns fat for energy instead of glucose. It is a metabolic disease which results from impaired metabolism of carbohydrates and volatile fatty acids. When there is energy demand, free fatty acids are released from body fat stores, and this free fatty acids are esterified into fatty acyl CoA in the liver. Once the ketosis begins, most of the cells will use ketone bodies to generate energy until we start eating carbohydrates again.
