From around 1915 to 1955, or for over half of the first half of the 20th century, jazz dominated the American dance music scene. Before jazz, there was dance music and dance bands, and even as jazz became more popular, there were still a lot of dance bands that either didn't play jazz or used jazz components sparingly. And although if jazz was dance music for a while in its history, jazz players were probably not drawn to this genre of music particularly for this reason. Jazz seemed to have been music that, in part, musicians created for themselves to escape the rigidity of traditional dance or marching bands or other commercial or popular music from its earliest days.
