Before comparing both conditioning we should first understand them.

What is Classical Conditioning?

Classical conditioning is a type of learning that occurs unconsciously. When we learn through classical conditioning, our behavior pairs auto-conditioned responses with specific stimuli. This creates the behavior in an individual.

It happens by having experiences by our own actions.

What is Operant Conditioning?

Operant conditioning is a type of associative learning process that modifies the intensity of behavior through reinforcement, discipline or punishment. Few efficient and rational ways are developed to bring about such learnings, like training.

Similarities between Classical conditioning and Operant Conditioning:

Both classical and operant conditioning are similar because they involve associations between actions and events in an organism's environment and are governed by some general laws of association.

The main similarity is that they both focus on learning behavior.

Differences between Classical conditioning and Operant Conditioning:

  1. The main difference between classical and operant conditioning is that classical conditioning associates involuntary actions with stimuli whereas operant conditioning associates voluntary actions with outcomes.
  2. Classical conditioning is also called Respondent conditioning, and operant conditioning is also called instrumental conditioning.
  3. Classical conditioning is developed in Russia where as Operant conditioning is developed in USA.
  4. Classical conditioning works with Involuntary Behavior and Operant conditioning works with Voluntary Behavior.
