The abbreviation "CUI" must appear in the document's header and footer in order to qualify as CUI markings for unclassified DoD papers.

What is CUI?

Within the U.S. Federal Government, there is a type of unclassified material called "Controlled Unclassified Information" (CUI). In order to streamline the exchange and protection of information, President Obama's Executive Order 13556 established the CUI program. The National Archives and Records Administration's (NARA) Executive Agent (EA), the Information Security Oversight Office (ISOO), is in charge of overseeing the CUI program. The executive branch agencies' use of the CUI program is under the ISOO's watchful eye. On new data, CUI will take the place of agency-specific labels like "For Official Use Only," "Sensitive But Unclassified," and "Law Enforcement Sensitive." Some data with historical labels will also qualify as CUI.
