What is Othello?
William Shakespeare's tragedy Othello was most likely written in 1603 and is set during the Ottoman-Venetian War (1570–1573), which was fought over control of Cyprus, an island that had belonged to the Venetian Republic as of 1489. After a protracted siege, the port city of Famagusta was finally conquered by the Ottomans in 1571. Othello and Iago are the two main characters in the story. A Moorish military leader named Othello was defending Cyprus from Ottoman Turk invasion while acting as a general in the Venetian army. Desdemona, a stunning and affluent Venetian woman who is much younger than he is, and he recently got married against her father's wishes. Iago, Othello's evil lieutenant, incites his master's resentment on purpose until the typically stoic Marlow kills his late wife in a fit of rage.
The audience may interpret Othello's physical reaction as pain and anguish, demonstrating how deeply he is affected by this news. It may also show that Othello feels betrayed by both Desdemona and Cassio and his deep love for Desdemona.
