Desdemona, a stunning and affluent Venetian woman who is much younger than he is, and he recently got married against her father's wishes. Iago, Othello's evil lieutenant, incites his master's resentment on purpose until the typically stoic Marlow kills his late wife in a fit of rage.
The audience may interpret Othello's physical reaction as pain and anguish, demonstrating how deeply he is affected by this news. It may also show that Othello feels betrayed by both Desdemona and Cassio and his deep love for Desdemona.
