Recently, the transition from adolescence to adulthood has been referred to as "emerging adulthood", which occurs from 18 to 25 years of age.

Early adulthood, according to developmental psychologists, is typically defined as the years between 20 and 40, and middle adulthood, as the years between 40 and 65. Human adulthood includes the development of the adult mind. Inconsistent and conflicting definitions of maturity are common; even though a person is physiologically an adult and behaves like an adult, they may still be recognised as a child if they are below the legal age of majority. However, despite being of legal age, a person may not exhibit the maturity and responsibility that characterise adults.
