Buddhism was introduced to China from Central Asia, where such monuments had been built for generations, and there the idea of carving caves. Buddhist temples out of rock faces first appeared. As religious deeds on the part of monks and artists, more and more caves would be excavated and adorned over time. In the north, during the Northern Dynasties, the majority of the cave temples were started. Early fifth century cave temples at Bingling and Maijishan, Yungang in 460, and Longmen and Gongxian in the early sixth century were all started in Dunhuang around 366.
