a) The option which most clearly marks a cause of the sectional crisis that led to the outbreak of the Civil War is Missouri Compromise (1820).

The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was a law that tried to mark increasing sectional tensions regarding the issue of slavery. This legislation admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a non-slave or free state at the same time, and also made free soil all western territories north of Missouri's southern border.

There were at least 3 six politically divisive issues related slavery which led directly to the outbreak of the Civil War, those are: slavery and political compromise; slavery and its moral arguments; and, slavery and its economic realities.

b) An example of an event or development was the time when Northerners and Southerners came to disagree intensely.

This is regarding the role of the federal government in catching and returning the freedom seekers. While Northerners pleaded to their states' rights to deny catching runaway slaves, Southerners asked a national commitment to slavery.

c) The other option which can also be considered a cause of the sectional crisis is Acquisition of Mexican territory (1848).
