From 1905 until 1914, he resided in Paris, where he studied piano with Moritz Moszkowski and composition with Vincent d'Indy at the Schola Cantorum de Paris. While there, he met Manuel de Falla, a friend and fellow countryman, and met the impressionist composers Maurice Ravel and Claude Debussy. He and de Falla went back to Madrid in 1914, where he worked as a critic, teacher, and composer.
