What is karyotyping?

Karyotyping is a process of depicting the total number of chromosomes in the genome of organisms using a particular arrangement order such as chromosome length, location of the centromere, and so on.

In other words, karyotyping indicates the total number of chromosomes in the genome of organisms. Most of the time, normal organisms are diploid, that is, they have 2 sets of each chromosome.

The same cannot be said for the gametes of diploid organisms. The gametes usually have a single set of each chromosome (haploid), unlike normal organisms.

The male gametes are known as sperms while the female gametes are known as eggs.

Thus, if the karyotype of an organism shows a total chromosome of 60, the sperm of the organism will contain 30 chromosomes.
