Definition of Acromegaly
Acromegaly comes from the Greek meaning "enlargement" and "extremity (arms and legs)". Acromegaly is a very rare disease because the pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone (GH) after closure of the growth bones in adults. Usually, this disease occurs at the age of 40-45 years. In children (before puberty), this condition is called "gigantism".
Acromegaly Symptoms
The symptoms of acromegaly can vary and usually progress slowly. At first, symptoms usually include:
-Swelling of the hands and feet. Usually, it is marked by changes in ring and shoe sizes.
- Fatigue and difficulty sleeping.
-Snoring.
-Changes in facial appearance, such as the eyebrows, lower jaw, and nose becoming larger, and between the teeth becoming wider.
- Numbness and weakness in the hands caused by pressure on the nerves in the hands.
-In children and adolescents will be very high.
In advanced conditions, complaints may increase, such as:
-Large size of hands and feet.
-The size of the nose and lips, as well as a large tongue.
- Skin changes, such as becoming thicker, rougher, and oilier or sweating a lot.
-Voice that becomes deeper.
-Joint pain.
-Chest pain.
-Headache
- Impaired vision.
- Decreased libido.
- Menstrual disorders for women and erectile disorders for men.
