Yuki Sakane, the main character, is eleven years old and lives with her parents, older brother Ken, and her father and mother.Yuki and Ken are depressed, but Mrs. Sakane tries hard to lift their spirits as the family is bussed to Tanforan Racetrack, which has been transformed into a camp for. They rekindle their friendships with several of their displaced Japanese American acquaintances who are also residing at the camp. Emiko Kurihara, a very conventional Japanese couple's granddaughter, is in the camp when Yuki first meets her.
