determine the freezing point of the solution made by adding 27.5 g of methanol ( ch3oh) to 250.0 g of water

Respuesta :

The freezing point of the solution is 267.03 K.

The Freezing point of a solution  is the temperature of a liquid at which it changes its state from liquid to solid at atmospheric pressure. At freezing point, these two phases that is the  liquid and solid exist in equilibrium i.e. at this point both solid state and liquid state exist simultaneously together.

A point at when a substance changes its physical state from liquid to solid at normal atmospheric pressure is called the freezing point. The temperature at which water freezes is 273.15 K.

In order to find out the freezing point we do the following calculations;

to calculate number of moles of methanol;

n = weight  ⇒ 27.5 ⇒ 0.85 mol

    Mol wt         32

we can calculate molality now;

m = n 0.85 mol ⇒ 3.4 mol/kg

      V       0.25 kg

The depression in the freezing point of methanol solution can be calculated by using the formula shown below;

Δ[tex]T_{f}[/tex] = [tex]K_{f}[/tex] × m

      = 1.86 × 3.4

Δ[tex]T_{f}[/tex] = 6.12 K

It is already known that the freezing point of water is 273.15 K

The freezing point of methanol solution = (273.25 - 6.12) ⇒ 267.03 K
