In the current political context, Washington's worries about political parties seem prescient. Political parties were initially considered to give people options.

Although they do give us options today, they seem to separate us rather than unite us. Making compromises is political viewed as being weak. They quarrel and argue until a short-term agreement is reached that usually benefits a select few, rather than working together to determine what is best for the majority of people. Washington feared that political parties would split the country in two. He watched as this conflict between Jefferson and Hamilton tore apart his own cabinet until Jefferson resigned.
