A Roman temple was a place to worship one of the many deities of the Roman polytheistic religion. Polytheists, which means they worshiped many deities, and each one needed sacred spaces where they could be worshipped.
The public religious ceremonies of the official Roman religion were held in the open air and not inside the temple building. Some ceremonies were processions that began, visited, or ended at a temple or shrine, where a ritual object could be stored and brought out for use, or where an offering was deposited.
