The designated airspace associated with an airport that becomes inactive when the control tower at that airport is not in operation is Class D, which then becomes class E.

Class D airspace areas are terminal airspace that consists of specified airspace (i.e., Surface Areas) within which all aircraft operators are subject to operating rules and equipment requirements. Service area offices are responsible for the coordination and implementation of class D airspace designations.

Class E airspace is controlled airspace that is designated to serve a variety of terminal or en route purposes. Class Echo airspace is controlled through the Air Route Traffic Control Center (ARTCC). In Class E airspace, IFR aircraft are controlled by ATC. Class E airspace typically extends up to, but not including, 18,000 feet MSL (the lower limit of Class A airspace). All airspace above FL 600 is Class E airspace.
