I should advice my friend to not suspend his medication, because the best scenario is taking them. Also, I would help him to analyse carefully his situation, what are the pros and cons without taking his medication. For example, if he has depression, I would say to him that without meds he will always feel depressed, and one day he could make a bad choice about his own life, or a loved one life. Also, we medication he's able to feel better, helping the brain to produce neurotransmitters like most people.
Besides he doesn't like the side effects, I surely will make him think about what's worse? having side effects or having depressive thoughts and feelings that can lead to a pretty bad result.
