John Deere felt that the cast iron blade of the plows, used by the farmers of the time, was very rough, and its shape accumulated mud. The plows that the farmers brought him to repair did not serve the damp, sticky land of the midwest, this land sticking to the blade, forcing the farmer to stop work to clean it. He also felt that the plow blades were not working very well on the clay soil of the Illinois prairies, and came to the conclusion that a plow made of highly polished and correctly shaped steel would be able to handle those soil conditions with very high efficiency.
In 1837 Deere developed and began to commercially produce the first forged steel plow. The forged steel plow had a piece of steel that made it ideal for the rough conditions of the midwestern US soil, and worked much better than any other plow. In this way, Deere greatly benefited farmers on the western border.
