Alchemy is a Mediaeval chemical science and speculative philosophy that sought to transmute base metals into gold, find a cure for every ailment and find a way to extend life endlessly

An aspect of philosophy that relates to astrology, which is a seemingly earlier tradition, was given the name alchemy in Latin Europe in the 12th century.

In Europe, alchemy led to the discovery of amalgams and other advances in chemical processes and apparatus. Alchemists in Europe eventually split into two groups by the 16th Century.

In the first group, new compounds and their reactions were discovered, leading to what is now known as chemistry.

The second discussed the spiritual, metaphysical side of alchemy, including the search for immortality and the transmutation of base metals into gold. As a result, modern alchemy is based on this theory.
