X chromosome inactivation occurs in early embryonic development. In females, one of the two X chromosomes is randomly and permanently inactivated in cells other than the Egg cells.

As a result of X chromosome inactivation, females also possess only one functional X chromosome as in males.

As a result of X chromosome inactivation, there is an alteration in the genome of a female because one X chromosome is being inactivated during embryonic development.
