Ifeach bus and each van is filled to capacity on both trips, how many students can ride in each bus?

Solution

Let v the numbers of kids in vans and b the number of kids in bus we can set up these equations:

$8v+8b=240$$4v+b=54$

We can solve for b from the second equation and we got:

$b=54-4v$

And we can replace at equation 1 and we got:

$8v+8(54-4v)=240$

And we can solve for v and we got:

$-24v=-192$$v=\frac{192}{24}=8$

And solving for b we got:

$b=54-4(8)=22$
