How do you calculate the grams of an element in a specific amount of a compound?

Look up the element's atomic mass.
For example, let's take water H2O.
Atomic mass of hydrogen is 1.
Atomic mass of oxygen is 16
So if we have 18 grams of water, we'd have 2 grams of hydrogen and 16 grams of oxygen.
