$1-\frac{1}{4}=\frac{3}{4}$

he has left 3/4 of his savings, now he spend 2/5 of this 3/4 so:

$\frac{3}{4}-\frac{2}{5}=\frac{15}{20}-\frac{8}{20}=\frac{7}{20}$

So he has left 7/20 of his savings
