We have add 1 2/3 to 1/4. First we have to convert 1 2/3 from mixed number to an improper fraction.

Doing so, we have:

[tex]1\frac{2}{3}=\frac{1\cdot3+2}{3}=\frac{5}{3}[/tex]

Then, we add the last result to 1/4:

[tex]\begin{gathered} \frac{5}{3}+\frac{1}{4}=\frac{5\cdot4+3\cdot1}{12}\text{ (Using the method for adding fractions)} \\ \frac{5\cdot4+3\cdot1}{12}=\frac{20+3}{12}\text{ (Multiplying)} \\ \frac{20+3}{12}=\frac{23}{12}\text{ (Adding)} \end{gathered}[/tex]

Finally, we convert 23/12 to a mixed number.

Quotient of 23/12 = 1

Remainder of 23/12=11

23/12 as a mixed number is 1 11/12

The answer is the second option.
