The correct answer is: The Battle of Normandy and the drive across France closing in on Germany from the East and the West.
The Allied Invasion started with the Invasion of Sicily in July of 1943, and ended with the June 6, 1944, D-Day invasion of Normandy when Allied forces fought the Axis powers in Western Europe. The propelling forces entered Italy through a small island, and soon made it to mainland. The Italian government which had ousted Prime Minister Benito Mussolini, signed an armistice with the Allies. However, Germany set up massive defensive lines across Italy to halt an armed push to the north. After a fierce fight the Allies broke through and captured Rome on June 4, 1944. Days later on D-Day, close to 200,000 Allied troops boarded nearly 7,000 ships and 3,000 aircraft and headed toward Normandy. Some troops landed on the French beaches where they encountered stern resistance from Germany across the French coastline. Allied forces finally gained hold on some beaches, dug in with reinforcements. By the end of June, Allies were in control of Normandy, and on August 25, Paris was freed.
