Slope of a linear function

Since the slope of a line, m, represents its inclination, it is given by the following equation:

[tex]\begin{gathered} m=\frac{\Delta y}{\Delta x} \\ =\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1} \end{gathered}[/tex]

We select any two lines of the table

In this case we are going to select the first, x₁ = -2 and y₁ = 10,

and the second line, x₂ = 0 and y₂ = 4

Replacing in the equation of the slope:

[tex]\begin{gathered} m=\frac{y_2-y_1}{x_2-x_1} \\ =\frac{4-10}{0-(-2)} \\ =\frac{-6}{2}=-3 \\ m=-3 \end{gathered}[/tex]
