They went to spend the following time before the dinner :

• 1 hour and 30 minutes at the Golden Gate Bridge.

• 2 hours and 30 minutes on the tour of Alcatraz.

• 1 hour and 15 minutes in Chinatown

So the total time =

$\begin{gathered} (1+2+1)\text{hours}+(30+30+15)\text{minutes} \\ =4\text{hours + 75 minutes} \\ =5\text{hours}+15\text{minutes} \end{gathered}$

Note : 1 hour = 60 minutes

So, the total time need to spend before the dinner = 5 hours and 15 minutes

So, 5 hours and 15 minutes before 7:40 pm will be calculated as following :

Convert 12 hours model to 24 hours model

7:40 pm = 19:40

$19\colon40-5\colon15=14\colon25$
