More about Alexis de tocqueville :

Tocqueville, Alexis Charles Henri Clérel, comte de Tocqueville, was a French aristocrat, diplomat, political scientist, political philosopher, and historian. His most famous works include Democracy in America and The Old Regime and the Revolution.

In both, he examined individuals' living standards and social conditions, as well as their relationship to the market and the state in Western societies. Democracy in America, which was published after Tocqueville's visits to the United States, is now regarded as an early work of sociology and political science.

Tocqueville was involved in French politics during both the July Monarchy and the Second Republic that followed the February 1848 Revolution. After Louis Napoléon Bonaparte's coup on December 2, 1851, he retired from politics and began work on The Old Regime and the Revolution.

Tocqueville argued that the French Revolution was important because it continued the process of modernising and centralising the French state begun by King Louis XIV. He blamed the Revolution's failure on the inexperience of the deputies, who were too fixated on abstract Enlightenment ideals.
