John Walson is said to have developed the first cable television system in the United States in 1948 in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, to help individuals who had trouble receiving television broadcasts due to the mountains and buildings that obstructed the signals.
Since broadcast television signals could be easily picked up by mountainside antennae and then retransmitted via "twin-lead" or "ladder-lead" cable to the valley population below, Mahanoy City was the perfect location for CATV services (where broadcast reception was very poor). Since he claimed the commencement date could not be verified, Walson's "first" claim is strongly contested(by whom?).
Cable television was created by Walson in the spring of 1948, according to both the National Cable Television Association and the US Congress. In his community of Maple Dale, Pennsylvania, which expanded to encompass Sandy Lake, Stoneboro, Polk, Cochranton, and Meadville, James F. Reynolds created a CATV system in the late 1940s.
