John Walson is said to have developed the first cable television system in the United States in 1948 in Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, to help individuals who had trouble receiving television broadcasts due to the mountains and buildings that obstructed the signals.
Since broadcast television signals could be easily picked up by mountainside antennae and then retransmitted via "twin-lead" or "ladder-lead" cable to the valley population below, Mahanoy City was the perfect location for CATV services (where broadcast reception was very poor).
