give the chemical formula of ferrous ammonium sulfate. why is this compound not considered a primary standard? why must sulfuric acid be added to the stock solution? 6) explain the functions of hydroxylamine hydrochloride and sodium acetate in this analysis. 7) explain the function of bromphenol blue in the cereal analysis. why was this particular indicator used?

Respuesta :

(1) Chemical formula of ferrous ammonium sulfate = (NH4)2Fe(SO4)2·6H2O

(a) A primary standard should have the following properties -

1) a compound must first be readily available, pure and inexpensive.

2) be unaltered in the air during weighing, that is, the compound must not (a) absorb moisture from the air or carbon dioxide from the air (b) be oxidized by air

But ferrous ammonium sulfate is found to be hydrated, hence it is not considered as a primary standard.

(b) The ammonium ions make solutions of ferrous ammonium sulfate slightly acidic, which slows this oxidation process. Therefore, Sulfuric acid is commonly added to solutions to reduce oxidation to ferric iron.
